On Friday, Jaunary 14 at approximately 1507 hrs we were
dispatched to the Black Wolf Mines for an electrocution involving two patients.
Engine 607-4 quickly arrived on scene and investigated a possible fire in
an electrical room, while other 607 members went to check on the patients.
The engine crew did not find any fire, but was advised by EMS personnel that
a landing zone would be needed. Both patients were conscious and had sustained
burns on their faces and hands. The patients were stabilized and
packaged for transport by crews from Somerset Area Ambulance, while a landing zone
was established in a field along Somerset Pike near the entrance to the mine.
Conemaugh MedSTAR 1 and STAT Medevac 5 responded to the scene and airlifted
the patient's to Conemaugh hospital. Both patients were treated for
their injuries and released a few days later. The Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigated
the incident. |
